Dipropylene Glycol (DPG)

Dipropylene Glycol (DPG) is virtually odourless with a slightly-ethereal-green solvent note. Interesting as a versatile solvent as it mixes with most essential oils but is also water soluble. Acts as stabilizer for compounds due to its viscosity when used around 30% in a compound. Not recommended for excessive use in compounds for cold-process soaps where over 5% can start to slow or inhibit tracing/saponification. Avoid in oily or wax based products such as candles, wax melts, massage oils, lipsticks etc. due to solubility problems.

Coconut Oil Fractionated (Coconut MCT) Fixed Oil

Coconut Oil Fractionated (Coconut MCT) is a stable almost odourless but with a slightly sweet oily coconut character, carrier oil. It has a very light texture with fast absorption into the skin. Ideal for mixing with other heavier carrier oils or blends (10-50%) to lighten skin feel and aid quicker absorption. Produces an even lighter effect when mixed 50/50 with iso-Propyl Myristate (IPM). Can be used as a solvent in perfumery compounds where its sweet natural coconut oilyness can be utilised as a blender in sweet and fruity fragrances but due to poor solubility with ethanol, water, resins, citrus oils (terpenes), powders and crystals make sure to test well first.

Solubilizer (Polysorbate 20)

Solubilizer (Polysorbate 20) is a water solubiliser for essential oils and perfume compounds. It has a faint warm-oily shampoo like note. Use from 4 parts Polysorbate 20 to, 1 part oil or compound. Mix the Polysorbate with the oil or perfume compound well then add the water slowly, stirring all the time. Note: Using some ethanol (20-30%) with the water will help the clarity of the end product and you may be able to reduce the amount of solubilizer necessary. As with all solubilisers the exact amount required for a completely clear solution depends on each compounds own ingredients and some materials like citrus oils and resins are almost impossible to get completely clear.

Ideal for mixing with other lighter carrier oils or blends (10-30%) to increase richness to aid a prolonged massage without constant re-application. Not really recommended as a solvent in perfumery compounds due to poor solubility of resins, citrus oils (terpenes), powders and crystals.

Avocado Oil – Fixed Oil

Add a just enough to a too-fast absorbing blend (e.g 5-10%) to give you the desired absorption rate. Not really recommended as a solvent in perfumery compounds due to poor solubility of resins, citrus oils (terpenes), powders and crystals plus will tend to produce rancid notes.
